On August 7, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested about 680 employees under the suspicion of working without proper authorization at plants in Mississippi run by Peco Foods, Pearl River Foods, Koch Foods, A & B Inc. and P H Food Inc. According to Mike Hurst, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, the operation is believed to be the largest single-state immigration enforcement action in the history of the United States.
Peco Foods released a statement saying they had been using the government’s E-verify program during the hiring process of their employees, leading them to believe they were properly complying with federal immigration regulations. It is crucial for employers to understand that E-Verify is a tool that must be implemented in conjunction with other ICE best employment practices, including annual training and internal audits.
