Permanent Resident Card with a USCIS-issued Sticker: Valid List A Document?

August 22, 2013

Recently, a client of ours posed an important question regarding a sticker on the back of a permanent resident card.  The sticker on the back of the expired card extended the card's validity period and the client inquired as to whether they could accept the permanent resident card as a valid, unexpired document?

The answer is yes!  A permanent resident card with a USCIS-issued sticker extending its validity is a List A document and is acceptable for Form I-9 purposes.  One thing that is important for employers to note is that the employment authorization of an employee with this sticker should not be reverified, just as employers do not reverify permanent resident cards (Form I-551).  Training on this and related issues can be found at the Corporate Immigration Compliance Institute.

USCIS guidance on the matter can be found here.
